First though, an improvement. I put a glass cover over the mine shaft so it's easier to see down into.
I started hearing the spiders when I hit dirt in the mine shaft. Now, I've figured that when you hit deep underground, theres usually an open pocket right behind it or near by. This made me want to find the spiders because I knew it would put me in a cavern, but I would have to fight a group of them.

So that was about the extent I was willing to go in that direction because I wanted to find the spider room. And boy did I pick the most perfect direction.

Here's just some basic info about creature spawners. They are always in pockets in caves. They look like cage that's on fire. They will keep spawning a certain type of mob until it is destroyed. BUT there's always treasure chests. It's like a mini dungeon.
So up I go. Let's see how I did.

| I told you the spiders were big |
Huzzah! I am victorious! I actually got rolled by the closest spider in the last picture. I came around the corner to take a picture and I got charged. Thank god I didn't die though. Now let's look at the rewards shall we?

String (1): used to make bows. I'll make one soon but I need to make a ton of arrows first.
Saddle (2): you can put them on animals and ride them, but you have no control over movement.
Bread (2): eaten to restore health.
Wheat (2): I'm pretty sure you use it to make bread. Not sure how, though.
Steel brick (4)
Bucket (1): collects water and lava.
Redstone Dust (1): acts like electricity.
The redstone dust was by far the most valuable item in the chests. The only thing I know about it is that you can lay down the dust to make a wire system. I currently only have one dust so I can't do anything with it yet. You can read about it on the wiki page: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Redstone.
And that's about it for now. Who knows what I'll find next...
